The tribe sent us a graduation stole for my daughter and it is lovely. The only problem was that the principal and the district told us that it was not allowed. They kept emphasizing that everything had to be the same at the graduation ceremony. I spoke to the Equity Committee, who were supportive. Several days of emails, texts, and phone calls to multiple administrators at the district followed. The good news is that my daughter will be allowed to wear the stole from the tribe at her high school graduation. We are all excited. But, it is crazy that it took this much effort to get it approved. I learned that only eight states have protections for Natives wearing regalia at graduation. Several people mentioned wanting to make sure there was a precedent. If you see pictures of high school students wearing regalia, beaded caps, eagle feathers or other regalia at graduation in Texas (especially being handed their diploma) be sure to post it widely including year and location information so that others can point it as an example. I will be posting our pictures. #karuk #nativeregalia
Hot dog!
Found the 1986 edition of the Washington State History textbook I read in high school. I am just now starting to write about the years my mother and I lived in Hoquiam. I remember clearly this picture of the violence against Chinese communities and was surprised to find it here on page 177. Is it unfair to judge books from an earlier time based on today’s standards? I bought it because I wanted to see what I was taught, what textbooks I was required to read.
I love these dummies! These medical mannequins being used at the new ACC campus were fascinating.
Already starting to melt
I had so much fun hanging out with the current IAIA students at #AWP22! I look forward to seeing their work in the world. #IAIA
